THE ground on a $117 million development in Canley-Vale is about the be broken, transforming a 32,900 square metre block of land into a four star hotel and entertainment complex.

The project – part of Cabra-Vale Diggers redevelopment plans – is expected to produce hundreds of local jobs, and contribute about $37 million each year to the region’s economy.

“The new Cabra-Vale Diggers development is yet another sign of progress for the district,” Boris Belevski, the club’s chief executive, told the Advance. “The club has always been about the community it serves.”

Construction is expected to start in early October with the demolition of old Cabramatta Police station.

The complex’s crown jewel will be an 8-storey hotel wearing Novotel branding. It’ll house 120 rooms, according to a development proposal dated August 2017, but club representatives claim they’ve found a way to add 20 more rooms, simply by hedging communal spaces “like hallways”.

It will have road access to Bartley and Phelps Street, will make use of the bus stop on Railway Parade, and be situated within 500 metres of both Canley Vale and Cabramatta train stations.

The complex will make room for a suite of new facilities, including a pool on its roof, and cinema, auditorium and gaming areas inside. In the basement, a two-level car park will be built, adding 211 new spots – pushing the club’s total car spaces to 1092.

Estimates suggest the hotel complex will lead to a lift in the local economy. About 455 to 503 part- and full-time jobs will be created when it’s up and running, while the 57,000 people who visit the hotel complex each year are expected to spend $8 million just “on goods and services other than on accommodation”.

In order for the development to go ahead, the club will be knocking down old Cabramatta Police station. The precinct, in operation from 1986 to 2003, was acquired by Cabra-Vale Diggers soon after, and has been left mostly untouched since its doors closed.

Late last month, the club hosted 30 officers who served at the precinct, giving them a chance to walk the halls before the bulldozers do their bidding in early October.

With the precinct levelled, the club can execute a four-stage plan that’ll see its infrastructure reshuffled. The bowling greens will be moved to the site of the old precinct, paving way for the hotel’s foundations to be laid.
