A senior correctional officer based near Dubbo has admitted to sending an explicit image to a group of children, including a colleague’s son.
Adrian Edward Robert Willis, 48, was excused from Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday, but the court heard he entered a plea of guilty to using a carriage service to send indecent material to a child under 16.
It comes after The Daily Telegraph and Ray Hadleyrevealed Willis sent the image to a Snapchat group chat in November 2022 and was not charged for more than a year.
Facts tendered to the court revealed Willis, of Dubbo, sent an image of his penis in a Snapchat group chat of four children and his colleague.
The colleague opened the message and took a screenshot of the image and sent it to Willis on another messaging app asking if it was him.
The offender initially denied the image was of him but later apologised for sending an explicit photo and said he was trying to get rid of spammers.
A parent reported the incident in November 2022, but the charge was dropped by NSW Police who found they “could not reach a standard of proof required to bring the matter to court”.
The partner of a female officer previously told The Daily Telegraph they were not given an update for months after reporting the incident to the police and Corrective Services’.
“I want him to either resign or to be terminated – you can’t be a public servant and send d--k pics to minors,” he said.
“Within days of reporting the incident to the governor, my partner was labelled by some colleagues as a ‘dog’ and a ‘career destroyer’ because they didn’t understand the context of the messages we had received.”
In November 2023, the offender was spoken to by police in relation to the offence and told them it was his image but did not wish to speak with them formally.
Following inquiries, Willis was contacted again by police in April and was charged.
Willis has been working for Corrective Services since 2002 in various roles and is currently suspended as a result of the offence.
The 48-year-old will be sentenced by the same court on July 10.
