An investigation is underway after a pilot died in a recreational aircraft crash in the state’s central west.

Police were called to Meadowview Rd near Tottenham, about 140km west of Dubbo, about 3.40pm on Monday when the aircraft was found crashed in a paddock.

The pilot, a 48-year-old local man, died in the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner while an investigation into the crash was being conducted by Recreational Aircraft Australia.

Police said officers had been searching the area for the driver of a car, which had been reported as stolen from a worksite near Narromine about 2pm, when the crash occurred.

Investigations into the whereabouts of the driver were continuing.
