A ute driver has been charged after a young man was struck and died in the state’s Far West yesterday.

About 12.30am on February 23, police say emergency services were called to Nelyambo Bridge Rd in Tilpa, about 140km northeast of Wilcannia, following reports a man had been hit by a ute.

The alleged driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old man, stopped and rendered first aid to the 29-year-old man who was hit.

The driver alerted NSW Ambulance paramedics and drove the injured man, meeting them on the Barrier Hwy.

The injured man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but he tragically died at the scene.

The driver was uninjured.

Officers attached to Central North Police District attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries, the driver was arrested at Cobar police station and charged with dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving causing death.

He was granted conditional bail to appear before Cobar Local Court on March 29.
