Tourists will experience Taronga Western Plains Zoo like never before if plans for a $24 million function room, restaurant and accommodation are given the green light.
Dubbo Regional Council has received plans for 10 duplexes, multipurpose function room, restaurant and cafe, pool, new internal roadways, carparking and other landscapes.
Planning documents state the proposed zoo development will generate additional revenue to support the zoo’s goal of protecting and educating the public on conservation practices.
“The proposal shall generate its own renewable energy, harvesting water and encouraging sustainable choices by its users,” the planner added.
“The proposal shall further complement and enhance the existing Taronga Western Plains Zoo as it will support its current exhibits, accommodation, and tourism.”
The Serengeti function centre will have 300 seats, while the 170-seat restaurant will operate on Fridays and Saturdays until 11pm and 10pm on other nights.
The planner stated the project will support ongoing wildlife education and conservation programs.
“The social and economic impacts of the proposed development relate to the expansion of existing facilities on a site that is used for tourism in the city of Dubbo,” the planner said.
“The proposed centre shall contribute to the Dubbo economy providing potential growth, employment and tourism in the area, as well as any multiplier gains.
“Therefore, the proposed development is considered to provide a positive social and economic impact in Dubbo and the surrounding region.”
