Tamworth: Volunteer firefighter allegedly lit fires

A volunteer firefighter has been charged in the state’s north-west after allegedly igniting fires. Here’s the latest.

Police have arrested and charged a volunteer firefighter following investigations into a number of allegedly deliberately lit fires in the state’s north-west.

Between March 4 and March 19, NSW Rural Fire Service responded to seven separate reports of fires in the vicinity of Swinging Ridges Road and Warrah Creek Road at Warrah Creek, approximately 90km south of Tamworth.

The fires destroyed up to 1.3 hectares of grassland beside the road and on private property in the area.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at Warrah Creek about 12am on Monday, following extensive inquiries by Quirindi Police, with the assistance from the NSW RFS.

The man was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with seven counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.

He was refused bail to appear before Tamworth Local Court today.
