Plans to upgrade a historic rural community centre in the state’s central west have been revealed.

The Stuart Town Advancement Association lodged a development application to Dubbo Regional Council for a $224,600 upgrade of the Stuart Town School of Arts, which functions as a community centre and theatre.

The local theatre and hall at 32 Molong St, Stuart Town, has been operating since 1934 and has provided a safe hub for community events in the village, as well as a public shelter in times of crisis.

The planner said the proposed additions to the existing premises are for “upgrading” the operational quality to the commercial kitchen space “to better cater for all events” held at the theatre, as well as the installation of a new shower area to increase functionality.

“There are no current plans for increased staffing or customer levels, thus being a non-traffic generating development,” the planner said.

“The proposal will have a positive impact through the upgrading of the commercial kitchen area of this successful town hall.

“It will contribute to the built environment of the village zone by means of upgrading the existing premises and will support the local and surrounding community by offering a quality community space for future generations.”

The planner has proposed to demolish the existing original rear kitchen and concrete patio areas to construct a new commercial kitchen with an accessible loading area to rectify the existing workspace limitations and health concerns.

The proposed development involves the complete reconstruction of the existing theatre kitchen area, including a new concrete floor, walls, roof, loading area, bin storage and an external wash basin.

As the building is a community-based centre, all staff are volunteers.

There are currently no plans for an expansion of staffing to this business.

Opening hours will continue on a booking service basis. It is understood that there are no community concerns regarding the current operational hours of the centre when in use.

The centre is on public exhibition until September 28.
