A man broke down in tears in a Sydney courtroom after he was denied bail over allegations he stalked a former partner in a regional NSW town.
Troy Michael Kennewell, 26, is charged with two domestic violence offences of stalking or intimidating and recklessly damaging property. He has not entered a plea.
Kennewell faced Blacktown Local Court via video from the Amber Laurel Correctional Centre on Thursday and applied for bail. He was supported by his partner in the public gallery.
The court was told Kennewell allegedly showed up to a home in Cowra, where a former partner of his lived, early on January 2 during a drug induced psychosis and ripped a fly screen door off its hinges before fleeing the property.
Court documents allege Kennewell was at the house between 2.30am and 2.45am.
The woman called police, with Magistrate Susan McIntyre noting she sounded “terrified” on the phone.
Kennewell had recently been released from prison for a conviction of assault occasioning bodily harm on December 26.
The court was told Kennewell had allegedly provided parole officers in Young, where he had moved after his release, with a false address.
When Kennewell could not be found, a warrant was issued for his arrest before he was later found and arrested in Sydney.
The court was told Kennewell was in a drug induced psychosis at the time of the alleged offences.
Kennewell has a history of violent offences, but his lawyer told the court his client had not committed any acts of violence since the alleged incident.
He proposed his client live in western Sydney with his new partner, who was supporting him in the courtroom.
Ms McIntyre said there were concerns about Kennewell if he was released on bail, given his history and the short span of time between his release from prison and the allegations. He was denied bail.
Kennewell appeared to have a breakdown on the screen and began sobbing as he told his partner – a different woman to the alleged victim – that he loved her multiple times. She also sobbed in the public gallery.
He was remanded in custody and will face court on February 5 at Wagga Wagga. An interim apprehended violence order (AVO) protecting the alleged victim from Kennewell was also created.
