A 16-year-old boy has been charged with multiple traffic-related offences after allegedly crashing into a police car during a pursuit through a town in the state’s central west.

Central West Police District officers claim they were patrolling Lone Pine Ave, Orange, about 2am on Saturday, when they saw an SUV being driven without headlights.

“Police followed the vehicle to Bathurst Rd where they directed the driver to stop, however, the vehicle allegedly accelerated away and a pursuit was initiated,” a police statement said.

The pursuit ended when the SUV allegedly collided with a police car in New St and drove away.

A boy, who was a passenger in the SUV, was arrested on Bathurst Rd after he allegedly ran away.

About 2.30am, the SUV was located, and a 16-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Orange Police Station, where he was charged with four offences.

The teenager has been charged with reckless, furious or dangerous driving, not stopping during a police pursuit, failing to comply with a request or signal to stop, and driving through a red traffic light.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in a children’s court on July 18.

The other boy was released without charge.

Police said inquiries were continuing under Operation Regional Mongoose, which is a high-visibility police operation to tackle serious property-related crime committed predominately by young offenders.
