A Dubbo man has received his first conviction for domestic violence after he attacked his pregnant partner because of an argument about food.

Lucas Howison and his victim had been in a relationship for 16 weeks and she was 10 weeks pregnant when he returned home on November 28 last year after a night out on the grog with his mate, court documents state.

The drunk 22-year-old and his victim had an argument after a complaint was made about food served up tasting like detergent was in it.

According to court documents, Howison punched his victim in the face and jaw before hitting her with a bat.

The victim “came at” Howison with a broom and hit him in the face with the handle of the broom, court documents state.

When police arrived, Howison said “take me away”, the documents state.

“We’ve had a domestic and I’ve f***** up,” Howison confessed to police.

“I’ve assaulted her, not just assaulted her, just punched her in the face.

“I’ve tried to talk to her and she’s just hit me with the broom.”

Police said the victim declined to provide a statement when they asked her about the domestic violence.

Howison pleaded guilty to one count of common assault in Dubbo Local Court.

Defence lawyer Bridget Byrnes said Howison had a good record and stopped drinking alcohol after he attacked his partner.

She said he had also signed up to do the Mission Australia Mannin’ Up behaviour change program.

Magistrate Gary Wilson accepted Howison had taken positive steps to deal with the problematic behaviour which landed him in court.

“Any domestic violence related matter is a serious matter and will not be tolerated whatsoever,” he said.

Howison was convicted and handed a conditional release order which requires him to be of good behaviour for 12 months.
