A company hoping to help close the digital divide between big city data internet users and their country counterparts has lodged a development application to build an $11 million data centre in Dubbo.

On a vacant block of land at 15 Jannali Rd, Leading Edge Data Centres plans to build a data centre which the company’s chief executive Chris Thorpe says will pave the way for faster download speeds in Dubbo and surrounding towns.

“It will allow Dubbo to become a lot more independent for its communication needs because it streamlines its dependency on Sydney metropolitan,” he said.

“You take Netflix or streaming services, if that content is cached or housed locally and streamed locally you’re no longer trying to pull a movie down a pipe from Sydney.

“It’s going to be a lot quicker, faster, more efficient.”

Mr Thorpe said while the building itself would be worth more than $1 million, the hardware, fibre, connections and systems inside it would make the total development worth about $11 million.

“In reality what we’re doing is closing the digital divide which currently exists.

“We will be bringing direct cloud access to all major cloud environments to Dubbo which is an absolute game changer for regional businesses.

“We’re providing the data centre facility and the connectivity … our clients come in with the physical hardware and software to create the private cloud environments, meaning there will be multiple cloud environments for local businesses to access without paying for expensive connectivity back to Sydney.”

Tech giants like Google, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Netflix would be ultimately able to use the Dubbo data centre to connect more directly with new local customers, Mr Thorpe said.

“It will have a big positive impact for residents in a 300km radius around Dubbo.

“We are shovel ready to build this facility, it takes us about six months to be live, but ultimately its dependent on local demand and government intervention.

“We actually build the facility in Heatherbrae in NSW. It’s a huge, prefabricated building and we truck it up to Dubbo in six major components and it’s then commissioned on site.”

Mr Thorpe said the data centre would be powered by 50 per cent renewable energy.

“It won’t be manned 24/7 but we’ve got state of the art technology monitoring all of the security of the compound,” he said.

If a development application is approved by Dubbo Regional Council, the data centre will help local businesses access new technologies and be more competitive in Australia and globally, Mr Thorpe said.

“We’re also empowering national businesses to be able to relocate workforce and have exactly the same IT infrastructure they do in Sydney,” he said.

“We’re also enabling global enterprise to come into the region.”
