There’s not too many ways of making a mark on the town you grew up in, but for Eddy Simpson – a host of one of Australia’s leading sports podcasts – that time has come.
Eddy, co-host of the Hello Sport Podcast with best mate Tom Birmingham, told the
The Dubbo News about accomplishing a lifelong dream.
“I’ve always dreamt of having a sign at the Dubbo Turf Club,” Eddy said.
“Since I was a boy going out there with the old man, I thought Jesus Christ it would be up in the lights as it were.
“So yesterday was a real bucket list achieved I suppose, a boyhood dream.”
Having become good friends “just down the road” at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, Tom shared a similar feeling to Eddy, speaking on his “goosebumps” when finally seeing the sign in person.
“I got goosebumps when seeing [it] at the Mecca of regional racing, which is the Dubbo Turf Club,” Tom said.
“It’s one of those things where you [just have] to pinch yourself.
“It’s a stones throw in country terms [from Bathurst] and Dubbo’s always been very welcoming to me and my family … when I was just a young fella going to the Western Plains Zoo and staying at the Motor Inn.”
Tom and Eddy are unable to attend Saturday’s race meeting having found themselves “double booked” to host Australia’s Most Ordinary Rig 2022 at the Ivy Pool Club in Sydney.
But the bad news finishes there with Tom revealing a “multi-year” sponsorship with the boys pledging their pilgrimage to “the Mecca of regional racing” for next year.
“It will be the first opportunity to get down there and rip and tear with the locals, we’ll definitely be back,” Tom said.
“But unfortunately we couldn’t do it on Saturday, so we made sure to get out there this week anyway just to eye the sign ourselves, touch it, touch the grass and smell the air.”
Eddy doubled down on Tom’s promise, saying “we’ll be there next year for sure”.
Hello Sport’s rise to fame
While the boys have amassed a huge following on Instagram of more than 40,000 fans which they label the “punters and dribblers”, there was a key moment earlier in the year where Eddy put his home town on the map.
In speaking on the podcast after the Easter weekend this year, Eddy stopped in at the famous Royal India Restobar during the break.
He was blown away with the establishment which he claims “stacks up globally” and went as far to say the Restobar’s cheesy garlic naan was enough to “bring Jesus back from the dead”.
Speaking to The Dubbo News this week, Eddy referenced an article by the publication, saying it “was one of the funniest things I have ever read in my entire life”.
“Everything I said was true, but just when you read it, it sounds different,” he said.
“It’s become a bit of a pilgrimage the Indian Restobar for our listeners to go there and to try the best Indian cuisine outside of India.
“I’m proud to have elevated Dubbo even within our little niche audience … Dubbo’s been a better town that it may have got credit for over the years, so it’s good to just shine a light on the positives.”
Although hitting the “heights of the podcast game”, Tom and Eddy were unable to work their magic and dine in early for a “private sitting”.
“We tried to move the heavens and earth for someone to unlock the back door for us,” Tom said.
“Shockingly the heights of the podcast game do not afford you a private sitting in the Restobar and we completely respect and understand that.”
But like returning for next year’s Derby Day, the boys will endeavour to tick off another bucket list moment, to share the greatness of the Restobar’s cheesy garlic naan, sometime into the future.
The first race for Saturday’s MAAS Derby Day at Dubbo Turf Club will start at 11.50am, ending at 5.34pm with the Hello Sport sponsored 1300m race 10.
