Medical students will go head to head with hospital staff – outside the walls of Dubbo Base Hospital – to compete in a charity cricket tournament.
Dubbo’s School of Rural Health will take on Dubbo Base Hospital staff at Victoria Oval on October 14 at 7pm, aiming to raise $5000 for Macquarie Home Stay.
The Country Club Dubbo organises charity events and volunteering at local events.
Club president Tomi Orundami told The Dubbo News the club was established in 2022 as the inaugural cohort realised they needed to “create a sense of community” as well as social events for the students to look forward to throughout the year.
“We’re trying to draw in as many young people as we can from hospital staff, families, and new people who have moved to Dubbo - we really want this to be a nice mixture of people getting behind a really good cause,” Mr Orundami said.
“Not everyone loves cricket, but we want to draw people down for more than that, whether it be supporting a good cause or catching up with friends.
“In a sense this event celebrates the friends we have made in Dubbo as medical students who we couldn’t do the course without - you need your village to support you in your studies so it’s a big thank you to the friends we’ve made.”
Mr Orundami said the club raised $2321 for the Macquarie Home Stay last year and have selected the organisation to support once again as “they play an important role in Dubbo Base Hospital”.
“Our future jobs and the jobs of other health care professionals would be a lot harder without it,” he said.
Student Jan Morgiewicz said the event is “going to be bigger and better than last year” with food and beverages available and an auction.
“Lots of doctors and allied health professionals are really keen to be involved and we’ve got plenty of new student talent to take them this year,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the hospital staff did beat us last year but I reckon we’re in a really good spot - we’ve got some secret weapons that will hopefully get us over the line”.
