Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of nine large gas bottles in the back of a white Toyota van on a busy Dubbo street.

The van, which had its rear windows covered up with what appeared to be sheets, was found parked near the intersection of Cobra and Chelmsford streets at about 12.30pm on Thursday.

Police spoke with a Lightning Ridge man who was driving the van and an inspection of the vehicle uncovered the gas bottles.

A Fire and Rescue NSW crew and the Environment Protection Authority were called to the scene to assess the shock find.

The gas bottles were declared unsafe for transportation and removed from the van.

No charges have been laid and a police investigation into the discovery is continuing.

Vehicle owners found transporting dangerous goods in NSW face a maximum $4400 fine.
