A man who denies performing sexual acts and indecently assaulting two of his grandchildren in his vehicle and a motel room between 2016 and 2018 is on trial.
The trial for the man aged in his 50s, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, begun in Dubbo District Court on Thursday after he pleaded not guilty to sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10, two counts of indecent assault of a person under the age of 16 and attempted sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 10.
In the opening address, the Crown prosecutor told jurors they would hear evidence from the complainants and other witnesses.
The court heard the complainants were aged between three and six at the time of the alleged offending.
The Crown alleged the defendant grabbed his granddaughter's hand, who was aged six at the time, and placed it on his penis for two minutes while he was moving.
In a separate incident, it is also alleged the man put his penis in his grandson’s mouth, who was aged four or five at the time, and tried to penetrate his bottom.
“[The accused] had a sexual interest in children between three and six years,” the Crown prosecutor told the court.
Defence barrister Derek Buchanon told the jurors the accused is described of “good character”.
The siblings were unaware of the incidents’ each other were allegedly involved in at the time, the court heard.
The defendant was arrested in 2022 after the girl told her mother about the alleged incident a few years later.
During her evidence, which was part heard, she explained she was about to fall asleep when she claimed he “made me touch him”.
She told the court he grabbed her hand and placed it on his penis while she tried to move away.
“I didn’t really know what was happening,” she said.
