A 37-year-old Dubbo man accused of robbing a Coles Express store has been refused bail in court.

Police allege Christopher Ross Johnson entered the Coles Express store on Whylandra Street with a knife at about 7.10pm Tuesday.

Mr Johnson demanded cash from a shop attendant and fled on foot towards Alam Street, police have alleged.

Police arrested Johnson at a caravan on Bultje Street about 10pm Tuesday and he was charged with one count of armed robbery.

According to court documents, Mr Johnson walked away with $150 cash.

In Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday, Johnson did not enter a plea.

Making an application for bail on behalf of Johnson, lawyer Ivy Johnson said police relied on CCTV footage to charge Johnson, but no one in the courtroom had seen it.

She said Johnson would be vulnerable in custody as he had recently attempted suicide and was admitted to a mental health facility.

Police said Johnson had prior warrants out for his arrest and had previously been convicted of violence offences which he served terms of imprisonment for.

Magistrate Gary Wilson refused the application for bail because of the significance of the alleged robbery and unacceptable risk Johnson could pose to the community.

The case returns to court in January 2021.
