A Dubbo man has avoided time behind bars despite shattering his mate’s jaw so savagely five plates and 20 screws were needed to repair it.

Brad Geoffrey Schink was sentenced to a 12-month jail term, however Magistrate Sharon Freund ordered him to serve it in the form of an intensive corrections order in the community.

Court documents revealed the 22-year-old bottle shop worker’s troubles began when he was out at the Milestone Hotel on June 20 and became heavily intoxicated.

While in the pub’s pokie room, Schink pushed his friend from behind and the pair started arguing and had to be seperated by other friends.

After security guards told Schink to leave the pub, he waited outside the pub for his friend to come out.

When the pub closed and the friend walked out onto the street, a shirtless Schink punched him in the face and blood began to fill his mouth.

The friend went home and carried on with work duties in the days after the assault, however his boss sent him home.

Tests revealed Schink had broken his friend’s jaw in three places.

Five plates and 20 screws were needed to put the jaw back together at Westmead Hospital in Sydney.

Schink pleaded guilty to recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and common assault charges.

In Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday, defence lawyer Jai Silkman said Schink had no criminal history and voluntarily completed a rehabilitation program for people with substance abuse issues.

Mr Silkman said Schink turned to alcohol in response to family stress.

“My client accepts he was highly intoxicated on the night,” Mr Silkman said.

The court heard Schink had enrolled in another two programs, one for mental health support and another aimed at changing the behaviour of men.

Magistrate Freund convicted Schink and said he should consider his behaviour if he wanted to be a positive role model for his family.

“I take comfort in the fact that you seem to have hit rock bottom … you have taken what’s happened and sought help,” she said.

“You should be proud of yourself for doing that.”

Schink was banned from drinking alcohol for 12 months, as a condition of the intensive corrections order sentence he was handed for the reckless bodily harm charge.

For the common assault, Schink was placed on a community corrections order for two years.
