An elderly man who was placed on the child protection register last year has been jailed for soliciting child abuse material.

Alan Harry Treseder, 76, was charged in June 2023, after he spoke to a 60-year-old Queensland man who was disguised as a 12-year-old boy in February of that year.

The Narromine man was charged with and pleaded guilty to failing to comply with reporting obligations and using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material.

Treseder had a Snapchat, Grinder and another social media account which he did not disclose to police following his prior conviction.

On Friday, Treseder appeared from Parklea Correctional Centre via audiovisual link at Dubbo District Court where he was sentenced by Judge Karen Robinson.

The court heard the offender initiated a conversation on a gay friendly chat line with someone who he believed was a 12-year-old boy in February 2023.

He sent images of his groin area with and without underwear, while he pressured the boy to send explicit images back on 10 separate occasions.

When the boy sent an image in response stating he was in a school cubicle, Treseder told him to delete the image to protect himself.

However, what the offender did not realise was that the 12-year-old boy was actually a 60-year-old man from Queensland.

Treseder attended Dubbo police station on June 14, 2023, where he was charged.

According to court documents, Treseder told police he was “horny” and receiving and re-reading the messages “aroused him”.

“He understood he was talking to a young guy, and they were under 18,” the documents stated.

Ms Robinson told the court that talking to a man who pretended to be a child does not make the matter any less serious as Treseder believed the recipient was a 12-year-old boy.

She said that he told a correctional officer his actions were wrong.

He was convicted and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment but with time served, will be eligible for parole from December 13, 2024.

He is also ordered to enter into a $1000 recognisance and be of good behaviour bond for three years upon his release, and must not travel interstate or overseas without permission from a probation officer.
