IF you are running low on ideas of how to give back to your community ahead of Wednesday’s DoSomething Day event, take a leaf out of Anne Holt’s book.

IF YOU are running low on ideas of how to give back to your community ahead of Wednesday’s DoSomething Day event, take a leaf out of Anne Holt’s book.

The Lifeline Northern Beaches publicity and fundraising manager not only works for the national not-for-profit organisation but volunteers her time visiting the elderly through the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) — a Federal Government initiative linking aged-care residents to their communities.

Being a CVS volunteer was one of many ways to give back to the community through Lifeline NB, which continued to provide crisis support and suicide prevention services nationwide, Ms Holt said.

DoSomething Day — an initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club — annually celebrates the work of volunteers such as Ms Holt and highlights those giving back to communities by spreading kindness.

“We’re always in need of a helping hand with our barbecue days at Bunnings and even sorting through books at our book fairs,” she said.

“People can also volunteer at one of our six stores on the northern beaches or as a telephone operator in the crisis support team.

“It’s estimated Lifeline will get one million calls from people needing help or counselling each year and our Balgowlah centre will take 65,000 of those calls.”

Donating well-kept secondhand clothing was another way to give back on DoSomething Day — to be held next Wednesday — Ms Holt said.

“Giving back by donating or volunteering really does make you feel good,” she said.

“You get to help others and make a difference to somebody else’s life.

“You can also take the first step of becoming a volunteer by emailing the Lifeline NB team on volunteer@lifelinenb.org.au or by phoning 9949 5522.”

An initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club, DoSomething Day on July 25 seeks to celebrate our volunteers and highlight those who are giving back by spreading kindness in their community.
