A DAY of giving nationwide, DoSomething Day, has inspired the Randwick Bowling Club to give back to its community by hosting the annual Easy Breathing Lawn Bowls Day.

The event is in support of the Prince of Wales Hospital’s easy breathing program and the spinal injury unit.

The easy breathing initiative is a pulmonary rehabilitation program that focuses on exercise, education and self-management training to improve the wellbeing of people who have ongoing chronic breathing problems.

Randwick Bowling Club general manager Bill Clegg said volunteers from both the men’s and women’s sections, as well as club employees and ClubsNSW staff will join forces on Wednesday, July 25, to participate in the bowls day to create awareness for these programs.

“Our bowlers have always jumped in and given a lending hand,” Mr Clegg said.

ClubsNSW board of directors member Dr Christina Curry, who is also a director of The Randwick Club Group, will be volunteering at the event.

Dr Curry said that Do Something Day was “our way of doing something small for these amazing, resilient people”.

Renae McNamara is the Prince of Wales Hospital clinical specialist physiotherapist and pulmonary rehabilitation co-ordinator.

She said patients and staff appreciated the support of the bowling club in hosting a fun day.

“It is a great opportunity to get them out of the house or out of their ward and take part in something fun and healthy,” she said.

“It is something that they perhaps wouldn’t be able to do on their own,” Ms McNamara said.

Seasoned lawn bowlers will help teach more than 20 patients how to bowl barefoot or from their wheelchairs.

The group will play a game and then enjoy a barbecue lunch, supplied by the club.

Mr Clegg said that it was important to “demonstrate the role clubs play in the community,” and he hoped this act of giving would inspire other clubs to consider what they can do to help their communities.

An initiative of DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club,

DoSomething Day on July 25 seeks to celebrate our volunteers and highlight those who are giving back by spreading kindness in their community.
