All Margaret Abel and Heather Stephens did was put out a few plastic storage containers and the people of Guildford delivered.
The pair came together for Guildford Leagues Club’s annual DoSomething Day campaign and nominated two charities they felt could use help: Youth off the Streets and Exodus, helping young and older people who are homeless.
The response from the wider Guildford community, they say, speaks volumes about the generosity of strangers.
“I was watching boxes fill with canned food and blankets and its extraordinary what’s been donated in such a short time,” Mrs Abel, from Greystanes, said.
Ms Stephens, a club director, said their charity fundraisers restored her faith in caring communities.
“I feel gratitude, this is what giving is about. When people donate for those doing it tough, it’s just extremely generous to see,” she said.
The boxes are near the entrance where anyone can donate food, toiletries, clothing and blankets.
Club general manager Alan Crow said the campaign had been popular and the club will add items to the value of $4000 once the collection is complete.
“This is what we do every day, in many cases we are the only connection the elderly have to their community and to see the support is always heartening,” he said.
The club will receive donations until the annual volunteer day on July 25.
DoSomething Day is an initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club and celebrates volunteers and those spreading kindness.
