A ‘pop-up beach’, jumping castle and patrol setup are some of the ways Surf Life Saving NSW will teach western Sydney kids how to be safe at the beach this summer.
The DoSomething Day program, being run in conjunction with Club Marconi, is a preventative response to the high number of people from the west that are drowning at NSW beaches.
People from Western Sydney are twice as likely to drown compared to residents from any other area in NSW, organisers said. Over the last ten years, 389 people have drowned along the coast – 91 of which come from Western Sydney.
Two sessions will be run this school holidays to educate families on beach safety messages, rip identification, sun smart strategies and the dangers of high risk activities, such as rock fishing, boating and cliff jumping.
The community program – an initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club – is being extended to families, as well as the club’s junior sporting groups, primary schools, preschools and vacation groups.
Sessions will take place at 10.30am and 12.30pm at Club Marconi, Bossley Park on July 18.
