FOR NSW Ambulance Inspector John Brotherhood and his team, every day is DoSomething Day.
Mr Brotherhood, who is in charge of ambulance operations in southwest Sydney, said his paramedics go above and beyond in their duties, in uniform and out.
“Our teams go out and do things every day. They get paid to look after people; however, on top of that, they’ll go out of their way to help,” he said.
He recalled a time when paramedics were called to a tragedy in which a father died just before Christmas and a family birthday. “One of my staff went out and fundraised and organised a trampoline for the kids for Christmas,” he said.
Mr Brotherhood mentioned other times when paramedics, on-duty and off, have picked up intoxicated people from the side of the road and taken them home.
Mr Brotherhood said acts of kindness should be a way of life. “It’s a bit concerning because there are a lot of people around that won’t do things for others,” he said. “Even simple things — if there’s stuff in the middle of the road, just stop, pick it up, and move it off.”
Everyone is encouraged to perform a random act of kindness for DoSomething Day on June 15.
