Violinist Andrew Haveron leads the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Mozart and Haydn concert at the Sydney Opera House this week

NORTH SHORE TIMES: Concertmaster Andrew Haveron makes his directorial debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Mozart and Haydn concert

LAST week, Andrew Haveron directed his first concert with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

The first violinist and concertmaster led the 30-piece orchestra in the Mozart and Haydn concert without the aid of a conductor.

“We were playing with each other, listening to each other, using telepathy,” the Turramurra resident said.

“It’s a smaller, much more intimate feeling.

“Things happen spontaneously, following the narrative of the music that we’re making.

“We follow our instincts.

“It’s a great feeling.”

Haveron will have another opportunity to lead the orchestra in a repeat concert at the Sydney Opera House on Friday.

In another first, he will perform his first solo with the orchestra in Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante, (Hob. I: 105), in which he will play alongside Shefali Pryor on oboe, Matthew Wilkie on bassoon and Catherine Hewgill on cello.

“The four of us get to play with each other, against each other, and sometimes it’s like mixed doubles tennis,” he said.

The concert will also feature Mozart’s Symphony No. 7 and Symphony No. 27.

Haveron joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra last year after performing as a soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony.

He has also been a member of the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet.

The British expat settled in Sydney after playing in concert halls around the world, deciding he liked Sydney best.

“My office is the Sydney Opera House,” he said.

“What more can you ask for?”
