AT AN age when most men are cheerily sinking beers, Tom Warrell is delicately sipping champagne to discern its nose and palette.
And it turns out, the 26-year-old from Cremorne may just make a job of it after taking out this year’s amateur Vin de Champagne Award - the youngest to ever win it.
Mr Warrell joined five others in the final, during which involved a blind tasting of three varieties of Champagne.
“The judges said it was my tasting that stood out to them, which was surprising because I hadn’t studied beforehand,” Mr Warrell said.
“Usually people go out and buy a collection of bottles to study but I did none of that — I think that actually helped me though.”
Mr Warrell’s prize is a two-week food and wine tour of the Champagne district in France, which he will leave for at the end of the month.
“It sounds as though we’re going to spend two weeks being showered in wine and food. It’s definitely going to be a money-can’t-buy experience,” he said.
