The days of reading textbooks in your bedroom are over with free pizza, lock-ins and a sprinkle of fairy dust on offer to HSC students.

THE days of studying for the Higher School Certificate in a lonely bedroom as exhaustion sets in are long gone.

The good luck fairy, free pizzas, voluntary tutors, “lock-in nights” and online resources are available to students at local libraries.

A Canada Bay Council spokeswoman said the goal was to help students catch up on study in a quiet and safe environment with access to the library’s school collection.

“Pizza and treats will be offered during the night, and there may even be an appearance from the HSC good luck fairy,” she said.

On those nights, the library will be closed to the rest of the public.

Board of Studies,Teaching and Educational Standards (formerly Board of Studies) Director of Curriculum Teaching and Assessment Paul Hewitt advised students to use time wisely.

“Co-operative study in a library will work for some people while working in isolation works better for others,” Mr Hewitt said.

Mr Hewitt said it was common for students to think they could have done better.

“They have probably done better than they think but need to re-focus and prepare for the next exam,” he said.

Academic mentor Rowan Kunz will also give a lecture to Year 11 and 12 students tonight (Wednesday, September 24) at Concord Library to talk about “the month before the exam”.

He will show students how to maximise their time.

At Marrickville Library, volunteer teachers offer free homework help for students up to and including Year 12.

Marrickville, like many other libraries, also has an up-to-date HSC collection that supports the high school curriculum.

All NSW libraries offer a wide variety of online resources and some students will have checked out the Board of Studies website to see comments from markers about what sets a great exam apart from an average one.

Website Your Tutor gives students the chance to chat to a teachers and is offered from 4-8pm on weeknights and on weekend.

There is also an Education Department app for students to practise multiple choice questions. T

“After HSC, employers and those in higher education will be more interested in the whole person, not just the HSC. A person’s personal skills and qualities will matter, not just their HSC achievements,” Mr Hewitt said.

The first exam is on October 13 and the last is on November 7.
