Penrith District Junior Rugby Union Club under-12 reps win club’s first state championship
The under-12 boys have been nominated for the Penrith Press Team Spirit Award, sponsored by FOX SPORTS PULSE and Rebel, after their gallant effort to take out the championship.
On the way to the title, the boys beat Central Coast 62-0, Gordon 26-12, Melbourne 52-0, Illawarra 45-5, Randwick 17-10 and then Manly 19-0 in the final.
District president and coach Chris Hicks said each boy selected in the representative program was now part of a unique period of history for rugby in Western Sydney.
“The first state win is fantastic for the club. Three years ago the district was re-founded, the whole idea was to give players more access to rep football,” Hicks said.
“We’ve had some success with players making reps for Sydney and NSW, but this is the first team that has actually won a state championship.”
Hicks said the quality of the playing talent witnessed at the championships showed there are a number of players who can aspire to become Super 15 players and future Wallabies.
“Our defence was outstanding with players making multiple consecutive tackles and boys frantically supporting their mates to hold the line, it was inspirational to see how much these boys wanted the title of State Champions,” he said. 0
“They were outstanding, the commitment they showed, the way they trained, the way they played their games, it was absolutely second to none in terms of their attitude.”
