At East Coast Lounge you can enjoy all the finer things in life — Australian wine, French cheese and glazed ham - and shopping. Everything is for sale, even the chairs you sit on and the cutlery you eat with.
Nestled on the edge of Chowder Bay’s unbeatable vista and in the historic Depot Building, this relaxing haven has brought a breath of fresh air to the lower north shore.
Sisters Jennifer Barrett and Christine Housego opened the doors in August and have worked tirelessly to create a space that feels just like home.
“We wanted people to walk in here and feel as though they have stepped inside a friend’s house,” Barrett says.
“The whole atmosphere of the place is relaxing. What’s not to love?”
Housego, who is hunting for treasure in India at the moment, hand-picks everything you see, all of which can be bought.
The food is meant to be shared and Barrett has the heavenly task of selecting the finest produce to feature on the simple menu.
She sources her cheeses and prosciutto from Formaggio Ocello in Surry Hills, the breads are delivered daily from the Bread and Butter Project and the melt-in-your-mouth ham is glazed in-house.
It really is hard to go wrong. The hummus ($9) is a comfortable place to start though, with its light sprinkle of paprika and generous drizzle of olive oil.
The charcouterie plate ($28) is the piece de resistance, thanks especially to a bitey truffle pecorino and perfectly pickled vegetables.
If you opt for a cheese plate ($19-65), don’t go past the gooey French triple brie. Cheese doesn’t get any better than this.
As for something to freshen the palette, the wines on offer are some of the country’s best drops and the champagne is exactly that — Laurent Perrier from Tours-Ser-Marne in France.
The beers are all from local brewers and the most exotic cider on offer, Willie Smiths, comes from Tasmania.
