WITH a wide smile, Monty Tait, had never felt happier then when he was carried from the ocean in front of a home crowd on Sunday, after winning the state surfing titles.
The Maroubra 16-year-old achieved his highest surfing honour, winning the Under 18 boys Ohana NSW State Surf Title.
After three days of surfing at Maroubra beach, Tait progressed through to a final of four surfers, including former Australian Junior Champion, Michael "Mikey" Wright, 17, who was tipped to take the title.
Tait, a natural-footer, threw down a wide variety of forehand turns to take the win in one of the event's most anticipated finals.
"In the last five seconds of the final Mikey congratulated me, and the hooter went and the crowd erupted and it hit me that I'd won," Tait said.
"I got a wave in, and got 'chaired' out of the beach, it was the best feeling I have ever had."
The Southend Boardrider has never won a major event and now moves on to the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Kiama in December.
"Before my heat I went into the locker room and sat by myself, and blocked everything out and just told myself that I could do it," he said.
"I was nervous going up against (Wright), he's travelled the world surfing."
Tait hopes to become a professional surfer.
"That's the dream, if that happened, I would be the happiest kid alive," he said.
