Redfern All Blacks under-6 to under-14 juniors have been fitted with individually moulded mouth guards for free.

Souths Cares has teamed up with the Centre for Oral Health Strategy, Colgate, and the University of Sydney’s Poche Centre for Indigenous Health to provide South Sydney Rabbitohs’ junior club the Redfern All Blacks with moulded mouth guards.

Souths Cares general manager, Shannon Donato, said the initiative is a great opportunity to get the oral care issue across to the kids by using rugby league as the vehicle.

South Sydney first-grader Beau Champion, a local junior, said it as a fantastic initiative.

“Mouth guards are an important part of playing contact sport, so it’s great that these organisations can come together and provide these mouth guards free to the local kids," Champion said.

Souths Cares will be rolling out a number of initiatives to support and encourage good oral health habits in youth of the South Sydney region and surrounding areas.

Rabbitohs players shared the ‘Bright Smiles, Bright Future’ message with students through the Souths Cares Teachers Aide program.

Players, along with Colgate’s Dr Rabbit, visited students in their classrooms to talk about the importance of regular brushing and oral hygiene habits.

Souths Cares Health Promotion Coordinator, Rhys Wesser said: "As a father of two young boys, I am aware of the importance of good oral health care from a young age, and as an indigenous role model in the community, I feel optimistic about taking this message out into our schools.’
