with a knack for defence and a focus on team play, Yasmin Halas has a promising future on the netball court.
The Bellevue Hill resident, 14, is this week’s Junior Sports Star nominee, sponsored by Rebel.
Her mum Andie Halas knew she might have had a star on her hands after Yasmin’s first season as a nine-year-old.
The Maccabi player earned the team’s most valuable player award in her inaugural season and has developed into a defensive talent ever since.
Yasmin was chosen for the Randwick rep development squad in 2013 and earned a spot in the NSW State Maccabi team that played in Melbourne for the 90-year Maccabi Anniversary last year.
In nominating Yasmin, Mrs Halas said she recalled other parents being surprised at her daughter’s skill after coming from such a low division.
“I remember being at the representative trials and they were shocked that she even got a chance,” Mrs Halas said.
“She has run with every opportunity provided to her and, thanks to all her coaches, mentors and her hard work, she has a very promising future.
“The sport has recognised her and encouraged her to be the best she can be. Not only do they teach her skills on the court but also how to look after her body and mind.”
Mrs Halas said she never expected Yasmin to excel at the sport as quickly as she did.
“We could never have imagined the journey it is taking her on and all the wonderful experiences she is having, from training with the Sydney Swifts, playing for NSNA reps in NSW netball carnival days, representing NSW for Maccabi and hopefully representing Australia in the Maccabiah games in 2017,” she said.
“Yasmin is really only just starting her netball journey and we’re really proud of everything she has achieved so far.”
