RABBITOHS halfback Adam Reynolds may know that a NSW State of Origin call up is firmly off-limits for now, but the 22-year-old impressed over the representative weekend with a dominant performance for City against Country.
Reynolds impressive case for a call-up included a brilliant solo try and kicking two goals in City’s 18-12 loss to Country – the halfbacks representative debut.
But it was the Souths Junior’s kicking game that had Rugby League Immortal Andrew Johns describing him at times as "unbelievable".
With two booming 40-20 kicks, a grubber for himself to score and a freakish territory-kick that intentionally hit the goal posts, Reynolds confirmed why he is touted as one of the best tactical kickers in the game.
A blossoming combination with Roosters centre Michael Jennings added to Reynolds’ case as the two exposed the Country defence, with Reynolds showing good vision to shoot the ball out to the speedster with an overlap.
The combination continued to evolve with a short line drop-out from Reynolds being regathered by Jennings on the fly in a set move.
Despite the dominant performance, NSW coach Laurie Daley insists that Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce will hold on to the NSW number seven jersey, citing not wanting to burden the young Rabbitoh with the position so early in his career.
"Adam was terrific for a young guy," Daley said.
"It was a step up in class. He got better as the game went on and it was good to know he can cope.
"At this stage he continues to develop and he's not been disheartened by the fact Mitch will be the halfback. But he is going well at this stage."
Fellow Rabbitohs Nathan Merritt and Nathan Peats produced solid performances for City, Peats topping the games tackle count with 44.
