SOUTH Sydney has retained first spot on the NRL ladder after a 30-24 win over the Gold Coast Titans.

The Rabbitohs held off a fast-finishing Titans team in Cairns, led by halfback Albert Kelly.

Souths star Greg Inglis scored the opening points, but the Titans hit back with two tries to Kevin Gordon and Kelly to lead 12-6.

Souths hooker, Isaac Luke, scored a try , but Titans fullback William Zillman put Titans in front again. On the stroke of halftime, Rabbitoh Dylan Walker scored and Adam Reynolds' conversion took the score to 18 apiece.

After Souths' Roy Asotasi scored and Ben Te'o crossed the line in the 57th minute, the Rabbits looked set for a victory with a 30-18 lead.

However a Kelly try breathed life back into the contest, with six points the difference. Gold Coast's last chance to level the scores was thwarted, when Inglis produced a textbook cover tackle on his first-cousin Kelly.

Rabbitohs head coach Michael Maquire described the win as "very lucky".

Souths play Parramatta Eels on Sunday at ANZ Stadium.
