HAMISH Morrison’s selection for the Sydney Swans’ Development Squad came as no surprise to his parents.
The talented 10-year-old, from Kensington, was kicking a ball before he was barely able to run.
Craig Morrison said the first thing he and his wife Jacinta noticed was the little boy’s timing.
“I think that it is inherent, with some of the stuff he can do. He certainly has the instincts for it,” he said.
Hamish only picked up AFL last year, demonstrating an ability in handballing and ball control. At season’s end he was named U10 best and fairest at his club, Maroubra Saints. This year he was selected in the Swans’ prestigious talent producer as an U11.

Hamish said he liked the diversity of play in an Australian rules game.
“It’s not like rugby league where each team has a turn at the ball. You can always contest for the ball,” he said.
The development squad offers kids priority draft selection if they continue until the age of 18. Hamish, a midfielder, said he was keen to continue for a few years. Mr Morrison said his son would embrace the challenge.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity that other kids might not get, for all sorts of reasons … I try to teach him to be humble with anything he does and I think that by and large he is.”
