WHILE most people are dreading the onset of winter, teenage skier Jacob Stevens is counting down the days until he can return to the snow.

The year 8 Scots College student finished fifth in the skicross at the International Children's Winter Games in Russia recently.

The games, sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee and recognised as the schools' Olympic games, matched 900 of the best snow athletes from 59 international cities.

Jacob finished fifth in the freestyle skiing event, where competitors are timed down a course that includes jumps, banks and a knockout tournament.

He won in his age group and finished just short of the podium in the overall category, in a field that included globally ranked athletes from Italy, Russia and Switzerland.

Jacob is this week's nominee for the Wentworth Courier Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by sports store Rebel.

Next on the snow athlete's list is preparing for 2014's International Children's Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria.
