MORE than 600 swimmers postponed their Easter egg indulgence to compete in the annual Bluewater Challenge ocean swim at Bondi on Sunday morning.
The 2.1km and 1km races rescheduled after heavy surf cancelled the original February date were hosted by Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club and marked the final event in the NSW Ocean Swim series.
Josh Beard, 19, of South Coogee, won both events, in times of 11m23s and 22m24s.
Ollie Signorini, 16, of North Curl Curl, was second in both.
Jane Tait, 16, was first female across the finish line in both distances.
Bondi's Dori Miller grabbed second in the 2.1km event.
The surf club's John Blanche said it was a riveting race between Beard and Signorini for line honours in both events.
"They swam stroke for stroke all the way in both races, and it was just a matter of seconds between them," he said.
"Overall, though, it was a big field we had 631 entries.
"The times were pretty good but the competitors had to swim all the way; there were no waves about to help them back to shore."
