THERE is only one rule for winter swimmers at the Bronte Splashers weekly meet: no wetsuits.

"You'll be laughed out of the club if you're wearing a wetsuit," jokes club member of seven years Emma Finnerty.

The Bronte Splashers meet every Sunday morning in winter at Bronte ocean pool, braving chilly temperatures and even colder beach breezes to compete in 30m, 60m and 90m events.

Up to 70 swimmers turn out each week to take on the sprint distances as a way to keep fit in the surf lifesaving off-season.

"We get between 40 and 70 people each week, but everyone's welcome to come down for $10," Ms Finnerty said.

"The races are handicapped, so it's people of all ages against each other all at once.

"We pride ourselves on not having a junior club all our young swimmers face up against the older ones, thanks to the handicap system.

"We even have really young kids in the water with their parents beside them in the lane, motivating them to get to the finish line."

New swimmers should arrive at the Bronte ocean pool on Sundays at 9.15am.
