THE only thing that out-weighs Austin Wem's love for the beach is his sense of moral responsibility to protect others in the water.

Austin, 14, of Daceyville, is in the running to be named 2013 State Junior Lifesaver of the Year after winning the Sydney Branch competition in February.

Entrants are judged on their water safety knowledge and passion to help others.

The South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club nipper was this week nominated for the Southern Courier's 2013 Junior Sports Star Awards.

"I just want to make the beach as safe as possible so people can enjoy it as much as I do," Austin said.

"My goal is to become a patrol captain one day so that I can use my experience to educate others on water safety."

The Waverley College student will attend a finalists camp later this month to select the Junior Surf Life Saver of the Year.
