FOUR years ago, Olivia Mitchell joined her first soccer team, Maroubra United. Now her natural talent with the round ball game has landed the 12 year old a spot on the NSW primary school girls’ team, and this week’s Junior Sports Star nomination.
With the Matildas’ star striker Lisa De Vanna and midfielder Chloe Logarzo playing at Olivia’s club, the North Shore Mariners, it’s easy to see why she’s motivated to succeed.
“I’d love to play professionally with the Australian women’s team one day,” the Maroubra girl said.
“I see the Matildas girls playing and I think it would be a really good experience to play like them.”
After playing with her school, St Mary St Joseph Maroubra Beach, Olivia’s form as part of the South East region squad saw her win one of 14 coveted places on the Catholic Schools Sports Association’s Mackillop team at a tournament in Canberra in May.
Olivia’s South East squad went on to play at the Primary Schools Sports Association Football carnival in Albury on June 7, where she was selected for the NSW team to play at the national championships in August.
The lead-up to nationals is a mixture of excitement and nerves for her.
“I’m not sure what to expect ... but it was a great feeling to be chosen, I’m really happy and proud.”
