A viral Sydney fishing shop owner has overturned restrictive bail conditions – including a home detention order and daily reporting to police – after a rape charge against him was dropped.

Fishing R Us founder Yahya Tuameh faced the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday for a bail variation application in light of one charge of sexual intercourse without consent being formally withdrawn.

The withdrawn charge was one of several allegations from November, including possessing an unregistered firearm-pistol, two counts of possessing ammunition without holding a licence/permit/authority, possessing/attempting to possess a prescribed restricted substance, possessing, supplying or making explosive for unlawful purpose and possessing or using a prohibited weapon without permit.

Those offences remain before the courts, and Tuameh has not entered any pleas.

Prior to the withdrawn charge, Tuameh had spent almost a month in Parklea Correctional Centre.

He was granted bail on November 29 on conditions of reporting once a day to Granville police, not being allowed to leave his home other than to attend court or a medical appointment, being banned from owning an encrypted device and being banned from drinking alcohol.

But on Friday he successfully had his bail conditions changed, meaning he was no longer under house arrest and no longer needed to report to police every day.

Tuameh founded Fishing R Us as a small fishing tackle stand at Flemington Markets in 1995.

Since then, the store, now based in Auburn, has become successful and gained a profile through Tuameh’s social media vlogs and his use of explicit language.

Tuameh has previously said he has not worked since November 2023.

He is next expected to face court at the Downing Centre on June 24.
