Two good Samaritans who intervened during an incident in Sydney’s CBD on Saturday night are recovering from stab wounds, while their attackers remain on the run.

Police today released CCTV footage taken around the time of the attack on Pitt St about 8.15pm, when the victims became involved in a scuffle with three youths.

The footage shows three caucasian males, who police would like to speak to, walking into a convenience store in the CBD just after 8pm.

The two men, both aged 24, received significant stab wounds during the altercation, with one suffering a punctured lung after being pierced through the back.

On Monday Detective Superintendent Gavin Wood said the two friends had “no connection” to their attackers.

Supt Wood said knife crime had no place in NSW and called the behaviour witnessed on Saturday night “weak” and “the actions of cowards”.

“Thee information that we have is that the three persons of interest were acting in an adverse way,” he said.

“Two members of the public have come in to intervene and they’ve been stabbed … for no other reason that being good, genuine members of the public.”

Police attended Sydney Hospital about 9.45pm on Saturday, where the more seriously injured man had presented for treatment.

He was later transferred to St George Hospital, where he remains.

His friend presented to Royal Price Alfred Hospital with wounds to his right arm and shoulder. He has since been released.

Supt Wood said the incident was “despicable”, and called on anyone who knew the culprits to come forward.

“The victims are clearly good Samaritans,” he said.

“They’ve seen the behaviour and they’ve seen that it would not be tolerated from any objective test. I say thank you to those people.

“These people have tried to do the right thing by the community and as a result they’ve been stabbed by three cowards.”

The three youths are described as being caucasian in appearance.

One was wearing a black Champion hoodie, with a black beanie and tracksuit pants.

Another was wearing a backpack, a blue cap with a while long-sleeve shirt and black pants.

The third was wearing a dark blue spray jacket, grey pants and a black cap.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000.
