Celebrity manager Titus Day, who faces charges for allegedly ripping off pop star Guy Sebastian to the tune of $1 million, has pleaded with a court to allow him to jet overseas for a major sporting event this month.

Day appeared in the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday morning where the court was told the high-profile talent manager was “clinging on” to his last remaining client, UFC Star Robert Whittaker.

Day’s lawyers argued for a variation of his bail conditions that would allow him to fly out to Abu Dhabi to support Mr Whittaker for his fight with Englishman Darren Till on what the UFC has dubbed “fight island” in the United Arab Emirates.

The media attention surrounding his 61 charges had led to “reputational damage”, the court was told.

Day’s legal team said he would be defending the charges.

His lawyers submitted the stoush between The Voice coach Mr Sebastian and Day currently playing out in the Federal Court contained a dispute as to “who owes who”.

Day’s lawyer claimed it was in fact his client who is owed a far larger sum of money than what police alleged he skimmed from the singer.

The court also heard former UFC champion Mr Whittaker had written a letter in support of Day’s services in a bid to allow him to fly overseas.

His legal team was prepared to put up a $100,000 surety with the court and hand over the passport of his wife to ensure he would return to Australia and not flee the jurisdiction.

There were also plans to see him escorted on and off a flight out of the country, police prosecutor Sergeant Corbett said.

“The amount alleged is $1.156 million subject to the charges in the face of a $100,000 surety.

“It’s the view of the officer in charge that flight risk is still a real risk.”

Magistrate Michael Antrum dismissed the application.

“While the consequences for Mr Day appear to be financially different the event may still proceed, one would assume it would,” Magistrate Antrum said.

Yas Island off Abu Dhabi is the makeshift home for the UFC.

The organisation is renting out the island in a bid to keep major fights on during the coronavirus pandemic.

Whittaker’s fight is scheduled for July 26.

Day’s matters were adjourned to be heard back in the same court at a later date.
