One of Sydney’s most popular pubs could be set to blare music until 3am in a multimillion-dollar expansion plan, sparking outrage among locals.
Bustling inner-city nightclub The Abercrombie’s controversial application to allow the club to blast music through outdoor speakers until 3am for a further two years has been rejected by many Chippendale locals.
With a near $6 million price tag, the development application put forward by Sol Abercrombie PTY Limited, has been recommended for approval by City of Sydney.
For the last 12 months the venue has had the authority to trial the outdoor speakers, along with approval to keep their indoor music playing until 5am for the last two years.
However, late night revellers could see the venue’s outdoor music silenced early, with residents speaking out.
Local business owner Tim Manning claims the plan does not fit with the “residential amenity”.
“We own and operate 770-student beds adjacent to the establishment,” he said. “Noise complaints are a consistent issue for our tenants since the opening of this venue.
“We have had 73 internal noise complaints from our residents.”
“The proposal for outdoor speakers in the ground floor courtyard to operate after midnight is not considered appropriate.
The nightclub located in Broadway, Chippendale, allows up to 700 patrons.
One local resident said they see “the spillage of intoxicated patrons” weekly.
“Over the past year I have found it necessary to contact the police on several occasions to report a disturbance caused by the excessive noise generated by the Abercrombie,” he said.
“I believe that such modification would further compromise the peace and safety of our community.
“The constant disruption to the peace and quiet of our neighbourhood has not only interfered with my ability to enjoy a peacefully environment but also significantly impacted my mental health.”
“If these changes are to proceed, I am prepared to take legal actions.”
A City of Sydney Spokesman said that the council would continue to take on public feedback.
“The City of Sydney has received a development application from the Abercrombie Hotel in Chippendale to continue a trial of its trading hours, which have been in operation for the last two years,” he said.
