A 14-story co-living student accommodation and educational establishment for pupils studying Buddhism, mindfulness along with health and wellbeing, is on the cards for the CBD.

The development application was recently lodged to the City of Sydney Council by architect Tone Wheeler for 269-271 Sussex St, Sydney.

The co-living 282sq m construction is set to have 76 co-living rooms, each with its own bathroom and kitchenette, to house students from The Nan Tien Institute (NTI).

The NTI is a private, not-for-profit, government-accredited higher education institution with a range of contemplative courses including applied Buddhist studies, mental health, social wellbeing and mindfulness.

The development is estimated to cost $31.9m and will contain communal spaces which will be used for lectures, discussions and meditation, if approved.

There are also plans for study areas and office spaces for university staff along with two full-time lecturers employed to support the education needs of the student residents.

The development would allow for employment opportunities through the management and maintenance of the co-living housing and communal facilities.

To encourage the students to ride to university there will be 73 bike parking spaces proposed.

Mr Wheeler said the development would positively contribute to the diversity in housing stock and availability within the area.

“Careful consideration has been given to the location, size and design of the proposed development to ensure that a high-quality outcome will be achieved which is consistent with the existing character of the area,” he said.

The site currently has a four-storey brick building, which would have to be knocked down to make room for the development.

The proposal is being assessed and the exhibition period will close on June 9.
