Young Aussie drivers who want to save money on driving lessons need to head to southwest Sydney, with the city and Newcastle the most expensive locations across the state.

Latest data from EzLicence shows NSW was the second cheapest state to learn to drive with an average $2.78 difference from Tasmania.

The average price per hour young Aussie learners are shelling out in NSW is $78.95.

The top ten most expensive suburbs in NSW were mostly Sydney-based, with the harbourside Point Piper taking the top spot at $97.75.

Down south in Grays Point, learners are paying an average $93.18 per hour and suburbs such as Denistone East, Chatswood West, Woolloomooloo, Mount Riverview, Gymea Bay and McMahons Point are all just under the $90 price tag.

It’s not all Sydney though with two suburbs in Newcastle above $90 price tags.

Mount Hutton is the second most expensive NSW suburb to learn how to drive at $93.75 per hour.

Taking the fourth spot on the top ten list is Newcastle’s Kotara South at $90.55 per hour.

Those living in western and southwestern Sydney can boast affordable prices as the top ten cheapest places don’t even scratch the $70 mark.

The most affordable suburb in the Sydney area to learn how to drive is Ellis Lane, west of Narellan at $59.41.

This is followed by Eastern Creek at $62.36, Orchard Hills at $63.47 and Mount Pritchard at $64.79.

EzLicence’s head of marketing Amanda Butler said she wasn’t surprised to see Sydney in the expensive column.

“The city’s well-known high cost of living and the significant operating expenses instructors face – including fuel, insurance, and parking – it makes sense that high demand areas like Point Piper top the list,” she said.

“However, less central suburbs like Grays Point also showed higher-than-expected prices, suggesting that cost pressures aren’t limited to Sydney’s busiest postcodes.

“What did stand out was the increase in price across Newcastle, particularly for suburbs such as Mount Hutton and Kotara South. While Newcastle isn’t Sydney, it remains a key regional centre. In some areas, limited instructor availability and steady demand are likely pushing prices higher.”
