It’s only round three of the NRL season but the South Sydney Rabbitohs are already taking time out of their busy training schedules to visit their youngest fans.

The Rabbitohs spent Wednesday visiting primary and secondary schools across Sydney, including in the CBD, inner west as well as Matraville, Banksmeadow, Pagewood, Malabar and Randwick.

Players visited more than 30 schools across Sydney to help kids become more active, be conscious about their diet and understand the importance of caring for their teeth and gums.

The Colgate Cavity Report said 60 per cent of parents find it difficult to get their children to brush their teeth twice a day, while a third of parents said their children had visited the dentist in the last 12 months due to tooth decay.

The annual Rabbitohs school tour, or School Blitz, in partnership the Rabbitohs’ charity arm Souths Cares, is now in its seventh year. The children received Colgate packs with floss, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Rabbitohs hooker Damien Cook spent the day at Darlington Public School, Crown Street Public School and Bourke Street Public School.

Speaking to Central Sydney magazine, Cook said it was the players’ job to give back to the community.

“We are in a very good position where we are role models in the community, so the kids watch sport and see us on television,” Cook said.

“So to have us come to the schools and give the messages, they might just remember it a little bit more from seeing our faces.

“Any way that we can help, we use our position to our advantage.”

Cook said he was excited to be apart of the Colgate Oral Care initiative again this year “so we can “teach the locals healthy hygiene habits from an early age”.

“We’re all about smiles here at the Rabbitohs,” he said.

“Whether it’s our fans in the stadium during a game, the team after a big win, or getting to meet these kids in person — we love bringing a smile to people’s faces.”

Cook said the main messages he hoped the students would take away were to brush their teeth twice a day, stay active, avoid eating surgery foods and limit the time on technology.

The Rabbitohs will play their first home game of the season on Sunday at ANZ Stadium at 6.10pm, when they will take on the Gold Coast Titans
