AERIAL photos have revealed for the first time the size and scale of the new light rail tunnel carved out underneath Moore Park west.

Construction crews have excavated more than 84,000 tonnes of fill to dig the 9-metre deep tunnel, which will connect to the recently installed Eastern Distributor Bridge.

The tunnel, which is expected to be complete late 2017, will be more than 500 metres long and emerges at a future light rail stop servicing the Sydney Football Stadium and Sydney Cricket Ground.

The tunnel will connect Devonshire St to the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The project’s co-ordinator general Marg Prendergast said the methodology used in building the light rail tunnel would significantly reduce construction time.

Construction of the tunnel began in April with a concrete slab installed last month.
