More than 500 food safety fines have been dished out to NSW businesses in the last year as new figures reveal the state’s hotspot regions for offences.
Restaurants, service stations, and supermarkets were among the businesses hit with penalty notices for breaching food safety and hygiene standards between July 2021 and June this year.
A total of $473,000 in fines was issued to 580 businesses over the 12 month period with the bulk of infringements relating to failing to keep venues clean and not taking measures to protect food from the risk of contamination.
A breakdown of fines issued by council area shows Canterbury-Bankstown had the largest number of fines with 140 penalty notices issued ($104,390 in total) over the 12-month period.
Other hotspots included Burwood (93 fines totalling $77,330), Cumberland (44 fines totalling $42,020), Blacktown (29 fines totalling $23,870) and Liverpool (26 fines totalling $21,120)
Also ranking high were Canada Bay (23 fines totalling $21,010), Willoughby (22 fines totalling $19,360) and Inner West (20 fines totalling $16,200).
The NSW Food Authority register shows Yang’s Dumpling in Burwood took the title for the food business to receive the most number or fines in the last 12 months with seven infringement notices.
The venue was contacted for comment but did not provide a response at the time of publication.
Zheng Xin Big Fried Chicken in Hurstville had five fines, followed by Tan Dong in Croydon Park, Charcoal Fish in Burwood, Mirchi in Hurstville and Johnny’s Groceries in Birrong – each with four.
The figures come from a ‘name and shame list’ published by the NSW Food Authority which lists businesses that have received infringements relating to food standards.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council pinpointed poor handwashing practices, presence of pests and cleaning issues as the most common offences in the local government area.
Mayor Khal Asfour said the council had “zero tolerance” for food venues that do not strictly follow food safety standards.
“The health and wellbeing of people dining in our city is a top priority,” he said. “Since the beginning of the pandemic we’ve seen compliance with food safety standards dropping. I believe this is partly to do with staff shortages.
“Council is currently working on strategies to assist food venues so that they strictly follow the standards, regardless of staffing issues.”
“I make no apologies about cracking down on outlets that don’t comply and we will keep doing so.”
