A drunken street fight over a mate’s girlfriend was not enough for one 28-year-old man, who continued his violent streak at police officers who had blasted him with capsicum spray.

Jeison Gonzalez, 28, had sunk ten beers at a Sydney home while enjoying a Sunday drinking session with friends on May 3.

The Kingsgrove man’s lawyer told the court the night began to turn when he followed his friend’s upset girlfriend while his friend had been using the bathroom.

These actions led to a physical stand-off between Gonzalez and his friend on Flinders St, Sydney, watched on by plain-clothed police officers about 9.30pm.

With bystanders trying to halt the physical confrontation by holding the men back, police intervened and blasted capsicum spray in the faces of both men.

Gonzalez’s lawyer said the 28-year-old man was “shocked” by the spray, with his reaction to flee.

The international student was chased and tackled to the ground by police.

Gonzalez’s work was unfinished however, when about 10 minutes later when being led to a caged police truck he spat on a female police officer.

Gonzalez, who arrived in Australia in 2018 and required a Spanish interpreter, told the court through his lawyer he was “disappointed in himself”.

“Disappointed of his actions towards police officers who are only doing their job,” she said,

Magistrate Michael Antrum said he understood more serious charges, such as affray, had been withdrawn following negotiations between police and Gonzalez’s lawyer.

“The sad reality is, Mr Gonzalez, that too many young men drink in our streets and take out their frustrations on police, both policemen and policewomen,” he said.

“You don’t need me to tell you being spat on by a drunk stranger when one is simply doing one’s job is a serious offence.

“This conduct was out of character, borne out of the fact you had consumed a large quantity of alcohol,” he said.

The 28-year-old was convicted of resisting and assaulting police and fined $880.
