Jarrod Smith: Convicted of drug supply, drug possession

A court heard a hardworking young man of “good stock” needed neither the money nor drugs when he turned to dealing cocaine.

The court heard Jarrod Mark Smith was a man of good stock and a valued hard work.

However, the actions of the now convicted drug dealer don’t seem to add up.

The labourer and qualified plumber was riding shotgun in a black Hyundai i30 cruising through the city when he was busted taking part in a brazen drug transaction, typical of a ‘dial-a-dealer’.

About 5pm on Saturday, February 20 a woman stood on the footpath playing on her mobile phone near The Dolphin Hotel at Surry Hills, court documents state.

The woman hopped in the back of the Hyundai and travelled with Smith and the male driver for a few minutes before she was dropped off on Fitzroy St.

Suspicious police officers ran checks on the car which revealed intelligence linking the car with drug supply, leading to the officers to swoop.

The police facts state when the men were pulled over and searched Smith, after initially refusing to strip off, pulled out a bag of cocaine from his underpants.

His wallet had $500 cash, which he admitted was the proceeds of crime, and a second mobile phone was found in the car’s glove box.

The woman was also stopped by police carrying a bag of cocaine.

At Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, Smith pleaded guilty to drug supply, drug possession and dealing with the property proceeds of crime with the court hearing this had been a “wake up call” for the 26-year-old.

His lawyer told Magistrate Jane Mottley he had been shocked when told of his client’s arrest as he came from “good stock” and was a hardworking young man who didn’t need the money or drugs.

“Police are trained investigators and they can see what is going on,” Magistrate Mottley said. “Anyone can see what is going on. If jail is a place you want to avoid, change your attitude.”

Smith was convicted of all charges, fined a total of $1400 and sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order.
